Obituary for Dorothy Hoover

Dorothy “Dot” Hoover, 94, died on Saturday March 21 at Golden Crest Assisted Living in Manchester. Born August 27, 1920 in Greenmount, she was the daughter of the late E. Vernon and Sadie Phillips. She graduated from Hampstead High School and continued her education at the Maryland Institute of Art. In 1944, she married the late Sterling W. Hoover, who passed away in 1996. She worked at Baltimore Gas and Electric for 22 years as a Technical Illustrator, retiring in 1985.
In addition to art, Dot (known affectionately as “Dottie” to her family), enjoyed knitting, completing crossword puzzles, going to yard sales, puzzles, watching Orioles games, and spending time with her family and her best friend Helen. In 2004, Dot, her daughters, granddaughters, and best friend fulfilled a lifelong dream of hers to visit Alaska, and in 2005 she got to see the Orioles during spring training in Florida. She was a longtime member of St. Mark’s Lutheran Church in Hampstead and was a member of the Hampstead Lioness Club.
Surviving are daughters Virginia White and husband Frank of Hampstead, Elizabeth “Betsy” Johnson and husband Doug of Manchester; grandchildren Shane Johnson and wife Brandy of Jacksonville, FL, Melanie Tindale and husband John of Columbia, Jesse and wife Kim of Hampstead, Christopher and wife Tiffany of Baltimore, and Julie Johnson of Jacksonville; great grandchildren, Calyn, Griffen, and Trinity Johnson, Josh, Jillian, and Jessica Tindale, Lewin Johnson, and Alexis White; and best friend Helen Simmons.
Friends may call on Monday, March 23, 2015, 2:00 pm - 4:00 pm & 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main Street, Hampstead. A funeral service will be held on Tuesday, March 24, at 11:00 a.m. at the funeral home, with Pastor Melvina Stricklin officiating. Interment will be at Greenmount Cemetery, Manchester, immediately following the service. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Carroll Hospice, 292 Stoner Avenue, Westminster, MD 21157.
