Obituary for Edwin Eugene Powelson

Edwin Eugene Powelson, 77, of Hampstead, passed away on Sunday, August 30, 2015 at Seasons Hospice at Northwest Hospital. Born December 18, 1937 in Ridgeley, WV, he was the son of the late John Isaac and Letha (Cooper) Powelson. He was the beloved husband of Mary Lois Powelson, his wife of 52 years.

He received his B.S. degree in physical education from Fairmount State College, Fairmount, WV and his Masters of Education from West Virginia University.

He had been a teacher and was the first Athletic Director at North Carroll High School, where he also coached soccer and basketball. Mr. Powelson taught 37 years and coached 34 years. He was inducted into the Carroll County Sports Hall of Fame in 2001 and in 2006 was the Inaugural Inductee into the North Carroll Hall of Fame. On September 11, 2009, the North Carroll High School Stadium was renamed "Powelson Field" in honor of him.

He had been a member of St. Bartholomew's Catholic Church.

Surviving in addition to his wife are daughters, Dayna J. Jones and husband Ron of Westminster, MD, Denean H. Koontz and husband Bernie of Hampstead, MD, Delynn L. Powelson of Hampstead, MD; sisters, Patsy Kelso of Chicago, IL and Delores Ridenour of Aurora, CO; grandchildren, Kristin Stitcher, Kara Stitcher, Kai Stitcher, Jensyn Koontz and Dayne Koontz.

He was predeceased by brothers Donald and James Powelson.

The family will receive friends on Wednesday, September 2, 2015 from 2:00 pm - 5:00 pm & 7:00 pm - 9:00 pm at Eline Funeral Home, 934 S. Main Street, Hampstead, MD. A Requiem Mass will be celebrated on Thursday, September 3, 2015 at 11:00 am at St. Bartholomew Catholic Church, 2930 Hanover Pike, Manchester with Rev. Michael Roach officiating. Interment will be in Hampstead Cemetery.
