Condolences

Condolence From: Lew Keyser III (Lewie) & family
Condolence: We are so sorry to hear of Mr. Powelson's passing. He was a living legend, an icon at North Carroll High School. While I didn't play any sports that he coached, he always believed in me as a musician, especially the one that he asked to play The National Anthem at all of the sporting events. My mom told me that the recording I made for him after I graduated, he played for many years until the cassette tape broke! It was an honor to know him. My favorite story (there are literally millions) was during gym class one morning. He needed some upperclassmen to paint the lines on the field for the football games for the weekend. A few of us students were supposed to stretch a piece of rope from one end to the other, and then paint over the rope. That was a good plan for the first few lines, until we realized that the process was slow and tedious. We noticed that the old lines were still faintly visible, so we decided to just paint over the old lines, free-hand style. We never heard the end of it from Coach, since the lines were nice and wavy, not the straight lines that he had hoped for! Oops... Thanks for everything, Mr. Powelson. Our condolences to the family.

Condolence From: Tony Christiani class of 1990
Condolence: It was an honor to have been taught by both Mr. and Mrs. Powelson! He left a wonderful legacy at NC. I can hear him now counting out super fast to his infamous neck rolls for warm-ups in gym class and I've always wondered how many times in a day he would say "Hey Catbird"!! To the entire Powelson family....May the memories you hold dear to your heart and the stories you will share provide you peace and comfort in the days, weeks and months ahead.

Condolence From: Ed and Betty Davis
Condolence: Our sympathy to the Powelson family. We are glad we can call Ed our friend and co-worker. He had great and high values that guided his life. These values were demonstrated in his daily life and interactions with others. He not only modeled these values but he passed them on to hundreds of others with whom he taught or met. These values were accepted by many whose lives were positively and forever influenced because of him. He truly was a “change agent” for good. Ed and Betty Davis

Condolence From: Steve DePalmer NCHS '81
Condolence: Our sincere condolences to the Powelson family. Mr Powelson always demanded 100% effort from his students and players. He showed competitors of all types that it’s not the size of the dog in the fight, it’s the size of the fight in the dog. I’m absolutely certain a generation of NCHS soccer players still hear his raspy, booming voice when things get dicey and perfect execution is required—an important job task, a business transaction, or even combat ops. And after a win he always reminded us with a stern tone: “Be humble now. Be humble”. You can’t buy that kind of learning experience and we’re all better for it. Rest well, Mr Powelson. You will be missed but never forgotten.

Condolence: Where to start with Mr. Powelson. He was always there for anyone especially his family. He taught my dad and uncle (Jim and Tom) as well as taught all of us how to drive. We will never forget how Mr. Powelson always seemed to get all his errands complete while we were driving. He was the best coach and always there for anything you may have needed. Mr. Powelson was one of the most competitive people I know and would always put up a good fight no matter what. He is going to be greatly missed. Rest in Peace Mr Powelson.

Condolence: NCHS Class of 1973. Loved Coach Powelson! He was one of the few people outside of my immediate family that I can say "he had a meaningful and lasting impression on my life." Great teacher - taught me to drive, and enlghtened me about human sexuality through 9th Grade Health Class; Great Coach - taught me to play and understand the technical aspects of soccer - a sport that I never played before 10th grade, Great basketball player as well as coach - although I played there wasn't much he could do for me there, I was vertically challenged, but most importantly - A GREAT MENTOR - you could talk to him about anything personal and he would listen and guide you in the right direction - he was honest and real, a truly genuine CLASS ACT. He will be missed. Rest in Peace - Coach Powelson! My sincere Condolences to all of his family.

Condolence: I was a part of the class of 1977 Although I played football and not Soccer,I still got to know Ed (coach Powelson) I always remember him when he was having you do push ups in gym class. He was straight forward and loved to see you succeed. He was also my drivers ed instructor. I remember we were waiting to turn onto Gorsuch rd and I had pulled up too far. He gave me heck and said to back up. I backed up without looking in the review mirror, and I bumped into a vehicle behind us. I thought I failed, I just had to endure some grief from him. But I passed. Thanks for the influence you had on me Ed!!!
