Condolence From: Gene Wethers
Condolence: To Danielle & Family, my sincerest condolences on the passing of Johnny. As a part of "my" original Baltimore radio family (pre-CBS and Country WCAO....the ancient Granum days), your parents were both great friends and supporters of my career and family life, and they will be missed. I am sure Johnny is a peace, united with Colleen, and gazing down upon you and yours....God Bless!

Condolence: Like so many people who knew Johnny Dark from the radio or a momentary "hello" in the course and his life, I feel a great sense of loss at his passing. The great ones are supposed to be with us forever. As a teenager in Baltimore County in the 1960's, there really was only one AM radio station and one announcer - Johnny Dark on WCAO. Harkening back to earlier eras, we would actually sit around and "look" at the radio while Johnny Dark talked to us about "our" music. And then many of us grew up, went away to college, settled in other parts of the country far away from the AM radio reach of WCAO and didn't come back. Except that about fifteen years ago, I heard THAT VOICE on WBIG in the DC/Northern VA FM radio market - you just could not mistake his voice, it had not aged a bit and suddenly I was staring at the radio again while he talked to me about "our" music. . With a little digging, I got an e-mail address for him and sent a l-o-n-g e-mail thanking him for helping build the musical soundtrack for my life. I told him that whenever I heard songs from the 60's, I also heard his voice in my mind. I shared with him that I had a three year career in AM radio in south central Virginia and that he had been my inspiration. It was a moment of clarity for me. A few days later, Johnny Dark answered my e-mail, profusely thanking me for reaching out to him and for telling him how much he meant to me and my musical development in the 60's. He said in his e-mail if he ever got around to writing a book about his love affair with music on the radio, he planned to call it "Building Musical Soundtracks" with a tip of his hat to me and what I had shared in my message to him. We never communicated again, but I saved that e-mail from Johnny Dark and I reread it tonight when I saw in The Sun that he had passed away. Yep, Johnny Dark is still talking to me on the radio. Thanks for the soundtrack. And thanks and appreciation to his family for sharing him with so many of us.

Condolence: I was a lucky one to have grown up knowing Johnny on the radio, and as I got older, actually had a chance to work with him for a number of years with the great WCAO. He'd walk into the studio in my first week and I'd get nervous being with this radio legend. Of course, Johnny wanted nothing of being called legendary, he was so down to earth. I still to this day have his critiques, which I learn from. I know he loved his family, and especially missed Colleen. Now their spirits are united forever. Johnny was a true professional, and my inspiration for getting into radio back in 1972. I was so very lucky to have known him for many years. My sincere condolences go out to the entire family and those who were part of his life.

Condolence: Farewell Johnny. I was saddened to hear of your passing. I have many fond memories of listening to you while I was growing up in Baltimore in the 60's and early 70's. Memories that have stayed with me since. Your voice, to me, has never been equaled on radio, or any other format. You were the greatest. Rest easy sir. And, as Bob Hope said, "Thanks for the memories"!!!

Condolence: Several years ago, I was asked to organize a sock hop for the Knights of Columbus in Westminster. I think it was in 2010. Anyway, I contacted Johnny at WTTR and we met and from that day forward, we became friends. He hosted our sock every year afterwards. I asked him at the first one if he could find "thanks for the Memories" by Bob Hope. I had a presentation for someone and I wanted that played while I gave a background about the person. That person Was Johnny. He NEVER forgot that. When my Mother passed in 2012, the first person there was Johnny. As class act - A class man - a true professional.

Eternal rest grant unto him O Lord. And let perpetual light shine upon him.

God bless.

Pat

Condolence: In the 60's I knew Johnny as Mr. Dark who worked with my dad, Ted Jaffee, at WCAO. I always remember my times at the station when I would see him and how nice he was, always wondering how I was doing and what record I would like him to play for me. Years went by and the old 'CAO gang scattered, then I met up again with Mr. Dark at WBIG. Still as gracious as ever, and he treated me like an old friend. His first request was "call me Johnny". When Dad passed away in 2011, Johnny was the first person to reach out to me from the Baltimore radio days.

My sincere condolences to Johnny's family, hoping that your fond memories and the support of family and friends help you through this most difficult time.

Condolence: While I didn't know you personally, other than a few, random chances to meet you in years past, I like so many others, certainly were influenced by, not only your talent, but also your everlasting commitment and dedication to the music and radio industry.

For so many music lovers, of all ages, you have both introduced music to our lives, as well as kept it alive.

My condolences to Shelly, Danielle, Alan and Brian, and your entire family and close friends, who will certainly miss you, but have so many fond memories to keep your enthusiastic sprit going for many years to come.
