Obituary for Charles Cooper

Charles  Cooper
Charles Elwood Cooper, 87 of Westminster and formerly of Hampstead, died Saturday, March 3, 2018 at Carroll Lutheran Village. Born December 4, 1930, he was the son of the late Charles H. Cooper and Reba M. Schultz Cooper and his late stepmother, Cora Tyrell Cooper. He was the husband of the late Florence Lucille Talbert Cooper, whom he married in March 1956.

He attended Hampstead High School and worked on his family's farm and drove a truck until January 1952 when he joined the US Marine Corps and was promoted to PFC. He served in Korea in Machine Gun Platoon Fox Company, 2nd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment. He was sent to Inchon where he was wounded. After his recuperation period, he was sent to Bunker Hill where he was wounded again. Charles was laid up on hospital ship Repose for 3 weeks, after which he returned to Korea for more assignments. He was discharged in October 1953 with 2 Purple Hearts, Korean Service Medal with 3 stars and the National Defense Medal.

Returning home, he worked on his family's farm, drove trucks, worked at Snyder's Auction House, was a school bus driver and worked as a mail clerk and substitute mail carrier at Hampstead Post Office until 1987. After that he worked at Carroll County Electric Co. and a cleaning company. He retired in 2000.

He was a lifelong member at St. John's United Methodist Church, Hampstead and past president of Hampstead Cemetery until 2005, and has been a resident of Carroll Lutheran Village since then.

Charles enjoyed Orioles Baseball an was an exceptional story teller, sharing his stories of growing up, family and war stories. He loved spending time with his grandchildren and great-grandchildren, playing Bingo and watching old TV shows.

Surviving is daughter Linda Jones and husband William, of Taneytown; son David Cooper and fiancee Robin Weidner of Glenville, PA; sister Elsie Cooper Armacost of Upperco; 4 sisters-in-law; 7 grandchildren, 5 great-grandchildren and 4 step great-grandchildren; many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.

He was predeceased by grandson Justin Tipton, sister Helen Cooper Bailey, brothers Lawrence, Elmer and Arthur Cooper; and 5 brothers-in-law.

The family will receive friends on Thursday, March 8, 2018 from 6 - 9:00 p.m. at ELINE FUNERAL HOME, 934 S. Main Street, Hampstead and on Friday, March 9, 2018 from 10 - 11:00 a.m. Funeral services will follow at the funeral home at 11:00 a.m. with Chaplain Jimmie Schwartz officiating. Interment in Hampstead Cemetery.
