Obituary for Nancy Norman (Brown)

Nancy Norman (Brown)
Nancy Bateman Norman, 80, passed away Monday, December 17, 2018 at Somerford Place in Annapolis, where she resided.

Born Nancy Lou Brown on September 13, 1938 in Westminster, she was the daughter of the late Lewis and Evelyn Miller Brown.

Nancy was a graduate of Westminster High School, Class of 1956, where she was an honor student, cheerleader, and member of the Varsitones singing group. She earned a four-year, full tuition scholarship to Western Maryland College and graduated in 1960 with a B.A. in economics. After college, she worked for three years as a research associate at the Harvard Economic Research Project in Cambridge, MA. She was a stay-at-home mom while her children were young, and then worked as a bookkeeper for about 20 years until she retired. She had lived in Westminster from birth until 1960, and then lived in Reston, VA for most of her adult life.

Nancy’s interests included reading, gardening, and playing bridge, and she loved traveling with her husband Jim (especially to Hawaii and London), watching the Orioles, listening to Gladys Knight and the Pips, sitting on the porch of her home-away-from-home in Chincoteague, and spending time with her grandchildren. She was a wonderful cook, and famous for making the best apple pies anyone in her family has ever tasted.

Surviving are her husband, Captain James G. Norman, U.S. Coast Guard, currently residing in Ashburn, VA; sons and daughters-in-law, John W. and Nancy L. Bateman of Dunkirk, MD, Robert S. and Kim Bateman of Reston, VA; grandchildren, Nicholas B. Bateman, Annika L. Bateman and Isabel R. Bateman, all of Dunkirk; and aunt, Marlene McLemore of New Oxford, PA.

A graveside inurnment service will be held on Saturday, December 22, 2018 at 1:00 p.m. at the Sandymount United Methodist Cemetery in Finksburg with Pastor Andy Vineberg officiating.

Arrangements are by ELINE FUNERAL HOME in Finksburg.
