Obituary for Herman W. "Jack" Jackson
Herman W. "Jack" Jackson, 94, of Catonsville, MD passed away on June 20, 2019. He was born on March 5, 1925 in Baltimore, MD to the late Herman Jackson and Bertha Mae (nee Greenfelder) Jackson.
Herman W. Jackson, more widely known as Jack Jackson, died June 20, 2019. Jack was born and raised in South Baltimore and was a graduate of Southern High School. He completed one semester at Towson State Teachers College before going into the Navy.
After boot camp at Great Lakes Naval Training School, he completed hospital corps school. He was then sent to Parris Island, South Carolina where he became a laboratory technician at the U.S. Naval Hospital there. Following a year at Parris Island, he was sent to Newport, Rhode Island. It was there where the crew of his ship was formed.
The U.S.S. Webster ARV-2 was commissioned here in Baltimore, and Jack became the only laboratory technician on the ship. The U.S.S Webster was in the Pacific in the Marshall Islands when World War II ended. By that time, he had become a PhM2/c. (Pharmacist's Mate)
After he was honorably discharged from the Navy, he worked briefly at the Sun papers in classified advertising until he enrolled at the University of Maryland. He was a graduate of the College of Education and was elected to Phi Kappa Phi, a national honor society.
Jack had a very strong major in Spanish and wanted to teach Spanish in Baltimore County High Schools. At that time Spanish was not in great demand. Only two schools offered Spanish and there was a waiting list of teachers wanting to teach the language.
Since no openings were available, Jack turned to his next love -- dancing! He enrolled in the training class at Arthur Murray's Dance Studio and stayed to teach full-time for three years. Many of his pupils became life-long friends.
Jack still wanted to teach school; and because elementary teachers were badly needed, he accepted a position in Baltimore County. He taught at North Point Edgemere, Parkville Elementary, and Hernwood (mainly fifth grade).
Upon retirement from teaching, Jack volunteered at the Greater Baltimore Medical Center in their "Nearly New" sales. He also joined the "Guys 'n' Gals" dance group, which performed all over town at senior centers, retirement homes, and churches, doing tap and jazz routines.
Having lived 31 years at the Ridgely Condos in Towson, Jack moved to the Charlestown Retirement Community where he continued to teach ballroom dancing to the residents into his 90's.
He is survived by his sister Elsie Sunday; nieces and nephews Carol Sturgis and her husband Timothy, Peter Sunday and his wife Peggy, Judy Kilpatrick and her husband, the late Clifton Kilpatrick, Sherry Goldman and her husband Joseph and Patricia Burton and her husband George; 10 great nieces and nephews; 10 great great nieces and nephews.
Family will receive friends at the Eline Funeral Home, 11824 Reisterstown Road, Reisterstown, MD 21136 on Tuesday, June 25, 2019, 3-5 & 7-9pm. Funeral on Wednesday, June 26, 2019, 11am at the funeral home. Interment in Lake View Memorial Park.
