Life Story for Clara M. Apple (DeLeon)

Clara M. Apple (DeLeon)
Clara M. Apple, 85, of Reisterstown, died on March 14, 2017 at Gilchrist Hospice, Towson, Maryland. Born on November 10, 1931 in Key West, Florida to the late Sara M. DeLeon (DeVault) and Ormond DeLeon. Devoted wife of 48 years to her late husband Ira H. Apple and loving mother to David J. Apple.
Clara grew up in Miami, but later moved to Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania with her mother, Sara, and finished high school at Elizabeth Seton High School. After graduation, Clara attended Duquesne University and later Robert Morris College, where she pursued degrees in pharmacy and later finishing in business.
Clara worked as an Executive Secretary for the Pennsylvania Board of Arbitration, and later for the National Broadcasting Company’s Radio affiliate in Pittsburgh, WJAS-AM. It was at WJAS where she met her future husband, Ira, who was a newsman and on air personality.
Clara was very active in the Dog Fancy. She had Boxers for over 50 years and showed many of her four legged companions at dog shows up and down the East Coast. Clara took several of her Boxers on to both Breed and Obedience Championship Titles in both the United States and Canada. Clara also trained, handled, and judged dogs at various dog shows and training events. She was active in Western Pennsylvania kennel Association, The Allegheny Boxer Club, The Ohio Boxer Club and later, when Clara, and her family moved to Boston, the Middlesex Boxer Club.
Dogs were not Clara’s only passion. Clara enjoyed playing Bridge. She and Ira would play with groups of friends from work, and later Clara would join several ladies’ Bridge groups and host weekly games with friends at her home.
Clara when not playing Bridge with friends, enjoyed community service. Clara was active for many years in the Reisterstown Area Meals-on-Wheels Charity. She would deliver meals to the elderly, and other non mobile residents of our area. Clara was also a devoted supporter of several local and nation Catholic Charities.
Clara M. Apple is survived by her son David J. Apple and daughter-in-law, Susan D. Apple of Westminster, MD. Also Sister-in-law, Lorraine R. Aronson, nephews, Marc Aronson and Tod Aronson of Pittsburgh, PA and nephew R. Ted Apple from Palo Alto, CA and her brother-in-law, Burton J. Apple of Boston, MA.
