Joan and Edward at MICA

Joan and Edward met at the Maryland Institute of Art after WW II.  Joan was in her early twenties; Edward was in his thirties and had recently returned from fighting in Italy.  He first saw Joan in the grand lobby of the old MICA building; from the vantage point of the second floor balcony he glimpsed her descending the curved marble staircase, and was smitten. Their courtship was not without a few small bumps - Edward had a temper and was just retruned from the war.  He did not suffer gladly those whom he condsidered fools.  After a heated verbal confrontation with the teacher of a class he and Joan were both taking, he stormed out.  The teacher, who knew they were dating, announced loudly to the class that she pitied the girl who married that man!  Both Joan and Edward often laughed over that story during the very happy 63 years of their marriage.

So important was she to him that his first cry on returning home each day was "Where's your mother?"  It was her opinion that he sought first on every painting or project he was working on, and her knowledgeable criticism - and praise - that he valued most.
