Coach Powelson was a giant in the soccer world. I was on a team that played against his team in 1964 (we lost 1-0). Then, from 1982-1997, I coached The FSK Eagles Boys Soccer team against Ed with virtually no success. In 16 years, we won one game. After learning to live with the losses, I actually enjoyed watching him coach and motivate his players. His demeanor and warmth were superb when we used his facility to play regional games against other opponents in 1986 and 1992. I told him then that North Carroll was a great place to play if we didn't have to face his teams!
The point I am trying to make... it was an honor to meet him, an honor to play and coach against him.... and a proper tribute to name the North Carroll field for him. He was the face of North Carroll for more than 40 years, with countless tributes from his former players and colleagues. Ed left us far to soon, after a courageous battle. and will hold a special place in the hearts of those he left behind!
